Beth Haskalah Study Groups

Shalom.
This Sunday’s Beth Haskalah ZOOM Study Group will be at 3 pm.  The topic is someone you probably never have heard of, Albert Memmi.
Our study group topics have rarely mentioned Sephardic Jews.  Albert Memmi was a Tunisian Jew who was born in 1920.  He lived in the Jewish ghetto and was subject to the negative attitude towards Jews expressed by both the Tunisian Arabs and the French colonialists.
Despite this, his academic excellence landed him at the Sorbonne where he met  Sartre and Camus (who wrote introductions for his first books).
Memmi wrote autobiographical novels and later wrote his more academic books which explained and confronted racism.  He even preceded Fanon in his analysis of the effects of racism. Memmi’s writing on race spanned 50 years.
I hope to see you Sunday as I share the life and work of this unique individual.
I will send out the link this weekend and a second time on Sunday.
Shalom, Barry Swan
